The city of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, has welcomed a new permanent finance director after a year-long search. The City Council unanimously approved Mayor Kahlil Seren’s selection of Rodney Hairston for the position on Tuesday. Since January 2024, the role had been occupied by interim or temporary directors. Councilman Jim Petras expressed the council's gratitude and anticipation for Hairston's contribution to the community during this critical period. Members acknowledged the importance of having a dedicated professional to assist them as they navigate through complex financial decisions and operate under a provisional budget.
Hairston brings extensive experience from his previous roles at the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities and the Cleveland Airport System. He assured the council that he is eager to provide the necessary financial insights to support their decision-making process. Council President Tony Cuda remarked positively on Hairston’s commitment, calling it "music" to their ears. The hiring comes amid ongoing tensions between the council and Seren's administration over the 2025 budget, which have persisted for nearly three months. Instead of approving Seren's proposed budget before the December 31 deadline, the council opted for a temporary budget to fund the city until March, citing the need for more detailed information and the completion of the 2023 routine audit.
The appointment of Hairston marks a significant step forward for Cleveland Heights. His expertise will undoubtedly bring stability and transparency to the city's financial management. As the council and administration work together towards a common goal, Hairston’s leadership promises to foster a more informed and collaborative approach to addressing the city’s financial challenges. This positive development signifies a renewed effort to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the community.
